rewilding and bioregionalism

We belong to the place we live. Let’s stay in it, learn the seasons, respect its limits and give back more than we take. Embrace the process of letting nature find its own realtionship to harmony.

Beyond our community garden landscape we also support the creation of spaces around the island for nature to be, nature. Instead of cultivating a plot of annuals to harvest, a foundation of native and pollinator friendly plants are encouraged to take up space and seed as they will.  With this idea of habitat improvement comes an invitation to be curious and present in nature, to celebrate unity in diversity and to observe harmony in our community landscape.

With land being poisoned, developed and privatized, and natural meadows and wetlands disappearing, it is more important than ever to make space. Space specifically for our dynamic ecosystem to tend to itself, aligned with nature’s principles.

We currently have two sites on the island that we have rewilded for habitat improvement.  In just a few seasons we are witnessing a large number of pollinators and other-than-human beings inhabit these spaces.  In return, the spaces offer back a delightful energy of love, growth and hope. One is located on the edge of Peter Haskell’s Construction shop on Route 15 and the other on the front lawn of Tomboy Construction’s shop on Cemetery Rd.  in Stonington, ME.

As these spaces flourish, we hope to encourage everyone to carve out a little space of their own. Improving our habitat grows love and improves our lives.

The process is as simple as collecting some recyled cardboard and laying it down on grass, weeds, even gravel.  Pile natural debris on the cardboard like leaves, loam, seaweed, straw, sticks, compost, coffee, woodchips, etc. to about a foot deep.  Allow this to sit a season and plant directly into it the following growing season.

Some great perennials and -excited to reseed- pollinator plants that are easy to get to take hold are goldenrod, catmint, hyssop, hollyhocks, calendula, coreopsis, milkweed, oregano, yarrow, red clover, wild roses, phacelia, bachelor buttons, mustards and more.

We invite you to belong to the piece of earth that you are on. Let yourself be limited by the place and share with us all the miracles that unfold.
