Everything we do is given freely.

We believe money is a functional exchange of care and energy, based on the value of a shared experience.

Removing cost as a barrier for someone to participate in our events is very important to us.

Instead, we offer you the opportunity to decide the value of each experience and all that is involved in its creation.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We are an independent non-profit organization, funded by private donations. info@thegardenprojectme.com

‘Painting the Project’ Plein Air Painting Classes

June 21 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join us at The Garden Project on Fridays June 7th, 14th, & 21st from 12 – 2pm for this fun and inspirational painting experience inside our beautiful garden with personalized guidance from our artist in residence this summer — Matthew Moncavage.

Relax, learn, and enjoy the process, and leave with your unique creation. All Materials Provided: pencils, brushes, pre-primed canvases, paints, color wheel, paint palettes, water jars, and easels. To respect the organic environment at The Garden Project, all of our materials are naturally sourced and made from recycled and compostable materials. All experience levels welcome!

What we will cover in our workshops:

Observing and Composing: Looking at an organic garden-scape and breaking it down into basic and visually appealing forms, interpreting your tableau through your personal lens (visual, emotional, practical, etc);

Planning and Sketching the Outline: Using your pencil and canvas, learn to quickly draw forms and outlines to serve as the foundation of your painting;

Color: Learning some color theory basics, and how to mix and use color to interpret and convey your subjects onto your canvas; and

Painting: Taking all the previous elements and applying them to a whole painting, piece by piece.

Teaching Artist Bio:

Hi! I’m Matthew Moncavage, a local artist originally from Washington DC, and a Deer Isle summer resident since my crawling days. Deer Isle has been a place of bottomless inspiration to me as an individual and artist, and I’m thrilled to have made it my permanent home since graduation from art school (RISD). My hope is to share my experience and inspiration with others in our community, while building my art career here.
